At the Division of Landscape Ecology and Landscape Planning, Institute of Landscape Ecology
and Resources Management, Faculty of Agricultural and Nutritional Sciences and Environmental
Management at the University in Giessen for a project on “Local adaptation and gene flow in Empetrum
hermaphroditum, a keystone species of boreal-arctic ecosystems, along an altitudinal stress gradient” a position (65%) for a research assistant is available for 3 years from 01.04.2012.

Project summary: To understand and predict the potential response of plant species to rapidly changing
envirnmental conditions it is necessary to analyse factors controlling adaptation, distribution and
abundance. However, there is a lack of empirical studies concerning the influence of interactions between
divergent selection and gene flow on local adaptation, especially for species in large continuous
populations. In arctic areas, snow cover represents a complex but very strong selection gradient. The
research project will address the effects of selection, gene flow and genetic drift on local adaptation and
genetic structure of Empetrum hermaphroditum Hagerup, an important driver of boreal and arctic
ecosystems. The main aim will be to understand how selection and gene flow in this windpollinated plant
affect its adaptation to habitat types with deep and shallow snow cover in continuous populations.

The 10th Clonal Plant Workshop (Clone_10) takes place on 12-16 October 2012 in Beijing. The major goals of the symposium are to strengthen communication and cooperation among clonal plant ecologists all over the world, and to compile and assess current knowledge of how clonal growth in plants may meditate the ecological consequences of global change.

The theme is “Ecological Consequences of Plant Clonality under Global Change”

Participants are welcome to present work on any aspect of clonal plant research, especially in the following areas:

• Roles of clonality in plant invasion
• Roles of clonality in plant dispersal, demography and population dynamics
• Roles of clonality in plant distribution, abundance and diversity
• Roles of plant clonality in ecosystem functioning
• Roles of plant clonality in ecological restoration

Konference CZ-IALE: GEO / BIO DIVERZITA - Management chráněných území

Cílem konference je především diskuze nad současným stavem územní ochrany přírody a krajiny v České republice. Ústředním tématem bude otázka budoucího směřování správy  NP a CHKO Šumava, které budou věnovány úvodní referáty vyžádaných řečníků. Věnovat se budeme jak obecným otázkám (např. ochrana přírodních procesů vs. ochrana kulturní krajiny), tak i konkrétním problémům ochrany a managementu chráněných území. Druhý konferenční den proběhnou tematicky volnější bloky referátů z oblasti ekologie krajiny, ochrany biodiverzity i krajinného rázu. Vědecký a organizační výbor konference si vyhrazuje právo rozhodnout o zařazení příspěvku do posterové či přednáškové sekce, případně příspěvek nezařadit. 
V rámci konference proběhne plenární zasedání CZ-IALE a budou ukončeny volby nového hl. výboru.

Find attached an announcement for a 6 months internship in the Museum. The purpose is to assist Jean Ichter, recruited by the "Service du Patrimoine naturel" in the MNHN (= the french national service acting in support to the Ministry of the environment for biodiversity related issues) in a European survey on experiences in habitat mapping. The internship should start in February and last about six months.
 
Good skills in English are needed to ensure proper communication with different contacts in Europe, analysis of literature and co-editing of the report. In addition to the financial compensation (around 450 EUR per month), specific grants are possible in particular to ensure proper lodging of the person.
