Festuca. Composed of more than 450 species, is one of the largest genera in grass family (Poaceae).

The genus has cosmopolitan distribution - it is an important component of the grass-ecosystems of the temperate zone as well as the alpine grasslands of the tropical zone.

Although the diversity of the genus Festuca is centered to the Holarctic zone of Eurasia and North America, important centers of diversity lie also in the mountains of tropical Africa, SE Asia and New Guinea as well as in Australia and New Zealand.
